What's more important than making sure that children are fed?

People can be extremely weird about free school lunches. They don't think it's the taxpayers' job to ensure that kids are served at least 2 meals a day, because they think it's the parents' responsibility to feed them. Anyone who feels that way doesn't know what it's like to be a hungry kid whose parents are trying to keep the lights on. Kids don't deserve to be punished for their parents' financial struggles, and society is a lot better off if we put taxpayer money into caring for children instead of any number of things it could be spent on.

Most schools serve hot lunches because they believe that every child should have at least one hot meal per day, and if it's not dinner, it should be lunch. If you have never had a time in your life when you were deprived of hot meals, you might not know what those without them are missing. The teacher in this story is outraged after finding out her students, some of whom deal with homelessness, are no longer going to have hot lunches provided by the school. Instead, they are going to get moldy food and suspicious turkey sandwiches that taste weird even when they're fresh. The kids at her school deserve better than that!!!

It shouldn't be grounds for taking away high-quality school lunches from the kids who need them! They're getting it for a reason, and that reason might be that it helps their struggling parents financially.

  • kitkattmarie OP It's not even admin. Our principal is pred about it! This was a district level budgeting decision. I have made sure EVERYONE around me (education or otherwise) knows this is happening. It's disgusting and absolutely neglectful!

  • FLBirdie The local media will (pardon the pun) eat this up. These are the kinds of stories they like to dig into, especially since children are involved. But before you go to the press, if you have a union, check with them about whistleblower-type accusations and protections. You don't deserve to lose your job (and the children don't deserve to lose a good teacher) over this issue.

  • nuktukheroofthesouth This feels like the rare rare appropriate situation to weaponize parents. I teach in a title I high school with a depressingly large percentage of totally apathetic parents, but even we have a handful of parents who would spearhead going to the media in a heartbeat with a discreet whisper. I'm lucky enough to have usually supportive admin and a school with minimal drama by title I standards, but I definitely know who those parents would be if needed.

  • DilbertHigh Our school has had the kitchen delayed many times, supposedly because of low demand. However, currently most kids skip lunch because the prepackaged lunches ash_l. The district doesn't view kids not eating as an issue, they view it as a lack of demand. It is disgusting because it impacts some of the poorest are communities most when they do this sh, and they know it.

  • Substantial Sea7327 my mom was a beloved cafeteria lady for her elementary school. I used to hear lots of stories when she arrived home from work. I know what kind of sh : you deal with behind the scenes and I'm sorry. the free lunches for all students is great because cafeteria workers won't have to face that moral dilemma of "do I risk getting fired for feeding this 6 year old when they don't have money in their account?" district is being really stupid for not listening to the workers here.
